Google already told you what matters
Local ranking comes down to three things, and Google publishes them openly: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well you match the search. Distance is how close you are. Prominence is how well known and well regarded you are.
You cannot move distance. You can move relevance and prominence, and that is the entire job of a local SEO agency, whatever it is called on the invoice.
This is why local SEO is the one area where a business can genuinely do a lot of the work itself. The highest-return actions are mostly free, and most local businesses have not done them.

Do the free things before you pay anyone
- Complete your Google Business Profile properly. Every field. Correct category, this one alone moves rankings more than most paid work.
- Get consistent name, address and phone details everywhere. Conflicting listings across directories quietly undermine you.
- Ask for reviews, systematically. Not once. As part of how a job finishes.
- Add real photos. Not stock. Yours.
- Answer questions on your profile. Nobody does this. It takes ten minutes.
If none of those are done, an agency's first invoice will largely be for doing them, which is fine, but you should know that is what you are buying, and you should know you could have done it yourself.
The map pack rewards the boring stuff. That is genuinely good news, because boring is cheap.
Where an agency actually earns its fee
- Location and service pages that mean something. Not 40 doorway pages for 40 suburbs. Real pages, for real service areas, with real content.
- Review systems that run themselves. The asking should be automated, because a human will stop doing it by week three.
- Fixing citation mess at scale. Tedious, and worth outsourcing.
- Connecting local search to actual enquiries. Calls, direction requests, form fills, measured, so you know which suburbs are worth the effort.
- Competing where competition is real. In a crowded category, prominence has to be built deliberately.
The review system is the one worth pushing on. Reviews are the clearest prominence signal you can influence, and asking for them consistently is exactly the kind of repetitive task that quietly stops happening. We hand that to automation rather than to a person with good intentions and a busy week.
When you do not need a local SEO agency
- You have not done the free fixes. Do them. Then reassess. You may not need anyone.
- You serve a genuinely tiny area with no competition. If you are the only electrician in town, congratulations, you already rank.
- Your phone does not get answered. Ranking first and missing the call is an expensive way to be visible.
- You need work this week. Local paid search gets you in front of people searching right now.
Where competition is real and the free wins are exhausted, though, local search is the highest-intent traffic in existence, people looking for what you do, near where you are, right now. That is what our local SEO work is built for, and it sits alongside the broader SEO program rather than replacing it.
How to measure local SEO honestly
Rankings are a terrible way to judge local search, for one specific reason: your ranking changes depending on where the person searching is standing. There is no single position to report. An agency showing you a clean ranking chart for "plumber melbourne" is showing you a number that does not exist.
Measure the things that actually correspond to money.
- Calls from your Business Profile. The most direct signal there is. Someone found you and rang.
- Direction requests. Genuine intent, and hard to fake.
- Website clicks from the profile, tracked properly so they do not vanish into direct traffic.
- Enquiries by suburb. This tells you where your prominence is real and where it is theoretical.
- Review velocity. Not just the total, the rate. Steady reviews signal an active business to Google and to humans.
To make any of that reliable, the tracking underneath has to be right. That means GA4 configured properly with the events that represent an enquiry, and calls tracked rather than guessed at. Most local businesses are flying blind here, and the ones that fix it are often surprised to learn which suburbs are actually producing customers.
The awkward corollary: if you cannot measure it properly, do not celebrate it yet. A map pack position feels like progress. A calendar full of booked jobs is progress. Only one of those pays wages, and they are not as tightly correlated as anyone selling rankings would like you to believe.
Frequently asked questions
What does a local SEO agency do?
It works on the two local ranking factors you can control: relevance and prominence. In practice that means a properly completed Google Business Profile, consistent business details across directories, a systematic review process, genuine service-area pages, and measurement tied to calls and enquiries rather than rankings.
What actually affects Google map pack rankings?
Google states three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is fixed. Relevance comes from a complete, correctly categorized profile and matching content. Prominence comes from reviews, mentions and general renown, which is why review systems matter more than most paid tactics.
Can I do local SEO myself?
A surprising amount of it, yes. Completing your Business Profile, fixing inconsistent listings, adding real photos, answering profile questions and asking for reviews are all free and all high-return. Do those before hiring anyone, you may find you do not need to.
How long does local SEO take?
Faster than general SEO. Profile and category fixes can move things within weeks, and reviews accumulate steadily. It is one of the few areas of search where a business can see meaningful change in a couple of months rather than a couple of quarters.
