AEO

How to do AEO: a step-by-step guide to being the answer

When a buyer asks an AI who to hire, somebody gets named. These are the practical steps that make it you.

Step 1: find out what the machines currently say about you

Before optimizing anything, get your baseline. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews the questions your buyers ask: “best [your service] in [your area]”, “who should I hire for X”, “is [your business] any good”. Note who gets named, what sources the answers cite, and whether you appear at all.

This ten-minute exercise usually settles two debates at once: whether AEO matters for your category (if competitors are being recommended, it does), and where the gap is (absent entirely vs mentioned but poorly described). If you are new to the concept itself, our explainer on answer engine optimization covers the what and why; this guide is the how.

Step 2: restructure content to answer questions directly

Answer engines assemble responses from content that answers cleanly. Pages that bury the answer under scene-setting get skipped for pages that state it in the first paragraph and then justify it.

  • Lead with the answer. First paragraph answers the question; the rest of the page earns the right to be believed.
  • One question per section. Use headings that are literally the questions people ask, answered in two to four sentences before any elaboration.
  • Add a real FAQ to key pages, actual buyer questions with direct answers, not marketing copy wearing a question mark.
  • Be specific. Named services, real locations, concrete facts. Vague pages give an engine nothing quotable.

This is not a separate content universe from SEO, Google’s guidance on AI features in search says plainly that the same helpful-content fundamentals feed its AI experiences.

Step 3: mark it up so machines can parse it

Structured data is how you label your content in a machine-readable way. It is not magic dust, but it removes ambiguity about who you are and what a page contains, which matters more when the reader is a language model assembling an answer.

  1. Organization or LocalBusiness schema site-wide: name, address, phone, service area, the works.
  2. Service schema on service pages, FAQPage on FAQ sections, Article with author details on posts.
  3. Author and Person schema: engines weigh who wrote it as a trust signal.
  4. Validate it with Google’s Rich Results Test rather than assuming the plugin did its job.

Step 4: make your business a consistent entity everywhere

Answer engines cross-reference. If your website, Google Business Profile, directories, LinkedIn and review platforms describe your business with different names, categories or service lists, the machine’s confidence drops, and low confidence means someone else gets recommended.

  • Same name, same description, same services everywhere your business appears online.
  • Reviews matter twice. Engines both cite review platforms and mirror their sentiment. Steady, genuine reviews outperform a one-off begging campaign.
  • Mentions are the new links. Being named in industry roundups, local press and community sites teaches models that your brand belongs in the category conversation.

AI recommendations are borrowed trust. The engine repeats what the internet consistently says about you, so make the internet consistent.

Step 5: measure it, and when AEO is not the priority

Three measurements keep AEO honest. Re-run your baseline questions monthly and log who gets named. Watch referral traffic from AI sources in analytics, assistants increasingly send clickable citations. And ask new customers how they found you; “I asked ChatGPT” is showing up in that answer more every quarter.

When *not* to spend on AEO: if your website is thin, slow or unclear, fix that first, AEO amplifies what exists, it cannot cite substance you have not published. And if the basics of SEO are not in place, start there; answer engines lean on the same foundations, so the sequencing matters more than the enthusiasm.

If your baseline check showed competitors being recommended while you are invisible, that gap is winnable, it is precisely the work our AEO service does, and being early to it in your category is a compounding advantage.

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO in simple terms?

Answer engine optimization is making your business the one AI assistants name when people ask questions you could answer, including “who should I hire” questions. Where SEO wins rankings, AEO wins citations and recommendations inside AI-generated answers.

How do I start doing AEO?

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the buying questions in your category and record who gets named. That baseline tells you the size of the gap. Then work through the fundamentals in order: answer-first content, structured data, consistent business information everywhere, and genuine reviews and mentions.

Is AEO different from SEO?

They overlap heavily, both reward clear, authoritative, well-structured content. The differences are emphasis: AEO cares more about directly quotable answers, entity consistency across the web, and mentions in trusted sources, because language models assemble answers from those signals rather than ranking pages.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Some changes surface quickly, answer engines that browse the live web can pick up improved pages within weeks. Signals that depend on reputation, like reviews and mentions accumulating across sources, build over months. Re-check your baseline questions monthly to see movement.

Can I measure traffic from AI assistants?

Partly. Assistants that cite sources send measurable referral traffic you can see in analytics, and you can track how often your brand is named in answers to your baseline questions. Some influence stays invisible, a user hears the recommendation and searches your name directly, which shows up as growing branded search.
