Google Ads AI Max, explained without the keynote music

AI Max is Google’s AI upgrade for Search campaigns, broader matching, machine-written ad text and expanded landing pages, behind one toggle. Here is what that means in practice.

What AI Max actually is

AI Max for Search campaigns is a bundle of AI features you switch on inside a regular Search campaign. It is not a new campaign type like Performance Max, your campaign, ad groups and keywords stay. The toggle adds three behaviors on top:

  • Broader search matching. Google serves your ads on searches beyond your keyword list, using your keywords, ads and landing pages to infer what you should match, keywordless targeting, in effect.
  • Machine-adjusted ad text. Google generates and adapts headlines and descriptions based on the search, your page and your existing ads.
  • Final URL expansion. Google can send the click to whichever page on your site it judges most relevant to the search, not just the URL you set.

If those three sound familiar, you have been paying attention: they are the descendants of broad match, responsive ad automation and Dynamic Search Ads, packaged as one switch with shared machine learning underneath.

Why Google built it (and why now)

People stopped searching in tidy three-word phrases. Longer, conversational, first-time queries make up a growing share of searches, and a static keyword list physically cannot cover them. AI Max is Google’s answer: let the machine bridge from your offer to the long tail of ways people ask for it.

It is also, less romantically, how Google sells more inventory, broader matching means more auctions you participate in. Both things are true at once, which is exactly why the guardrails section below matters.

The controls you keep

AI Max ships with more controls than early automation did, which suggests Google learned from the feedback:

  • Brand controls: specify brands your ads should (or should not) show alongside, so broadened matching does not drag you into competitor bidding you never chose.
  • Locations of interest: target searches about a place, not just people in it, at the ad group level.
  • URL exclusions: fence off pages final URL expansion must never send traffic to (careers pages, legal pages, that blog post from 2019).
  • Reporting on what the machine did: search terms reporting covers AI Max matches, and asset reporting shows the text Google generated. The visibility is better than Performance Max offers; use it.

Automation you can audit is a tool. Automation you cannot audit is a subscription. AI Max, checked weekly, stays the first kind.

Should you turn it on?

Good candidates: accounts with solid conversion tracking and volume, mature campaigns whose keyword lists have plateaued, and sites with strong landing pages for the machine to read and route to. In those accounts, AI Max is a sensible way to reach searches you cannot enumerate.

Wait, if: your tracking is shaky (broader matching optimized toward bad data is just faster waste), your account is new with little conversion history, your landing pages are thin (the machine writes ads *from* your pages, give it nothing and it will work with nothing), or your margins cannot absorb an experimentation period.

And a positioning note: AI Max lives inside Search; Performance Max spans every Google surface. They answer different questions, “should my search campaign match more broadly?” versus “should one campaign buy everything?”, and plenty of accounts sensibly run both.

How to roll it out sanely

  1. Verify tracking first. Broader matching multiplies whatever your conversion data teaches. Make sure it teaches the truth.
  2. Turn it on for one campaign, not the account. Treat it as an experiment with a budget you can watch calmly.
  3. Set the guardrails on day one. Brand controls, URL exclusions, and your negative keyword list carried over.
  4. Review search terms and generated assets weekly for the first month. Exclude the nonsense, note the gems, new matched searches that convert are keyword research Google did for you.
  5. Judge on cost per conversion after the learning period, against the same campaign’s history. Not on impressions, which will flatter it.

That cadence (inputs verified, guardrails set, outputs interrogated weekly) is the same discipline in our general Google Ads tips, and it is how our Google Ads management runs every automation Google ships. The features change yearly; the discipline does not.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI Max in Google Ads?

A suite of AI features you enable inside a standard Search campaign. It broadens matching beyond your keyword list, generates and adapts ad text from your pages and existing ads, and can route clicks to the most relevant page on your site. Your campaign structure and keywords remain.

Is AI Max the same as Performance Max?

No. Performance Max is a separate campaign type buying across all Google surfaces, YouTube, Display, Shopping and more. AI Max upgrades an existing Search campaign to match more searches and automate ad text within Search. Many accounts run both for different jobs.

Does AI Max replace keywords?

Not exactly, it reduces their exclusivity. Your keywords still anchor the campaign and inform the machine, but AI Max also matches searches outside the list based on your ads and landing pages. Negative keywords and brand controls remain your fences, and they matter more once matching broadens.

Can I see which searches AI Max matched?

Yes, search terms reporting includes traffic from AI Max’s expanded matching, and asset reporting shows the headlines and descriptions Google generated. Reviewing both weekly during rollout is the difference between automation you manage and automation that manages you.

Should a small account use AI Max?

Usually not first. Broader matching needs conversion data to learn from and budget to explore with; small or new accounts get better economics from tight phrase and exact match campaigns while history builds. Revisit once tracking is verified and conversions are steady.
